Christmas Holiday to Thailand (Part One) / by Joshua P Jacks

A lot has happened since my last post.  You will have to forgive me for taking a 3 week break! I can’t believe it has been that long since I have blogged.  Because of it, I have decided to do a four part blog.  So here is part one!

I hope you all had a safe and happy Christmas/New Year!  Ours was definitely different than any other!  On the 20th of December we packed our Truck with stuff and people and were off to our first part of our holiday trip!

I need to just take a break and just stress how important the STL program is!  I have become a genuine supporter now!  It is great having a truck.  Not only are we able to take people to hospitals, visit villages, and use for transporting people anywhere else we need to, it makes it possible for us to be able to take a vacation without spending all our money on plane tickets!  Thank You STL!!!

We had to take a long route to Chiang Mai, Thailand (final destination), We have an Isuzu Truck and there is only one dealer, located in the Capital city of Lao. It took about 8 hours to get to Vientiane. It adds about 8 hours to the trip but we needed the brakes checked and the oil changed on the truck. It is a climb up the mountain with hair pin turns.  We were able to find out that, this particular driving causes motion sickness for our little man.  When we reached a restaurant at the half way point, we thought we were in the clear, but Noah got sick. We were able to get very creative in cleaning a truck, his favorite blankie that he can’t fall asleep with out and the car seat. We just needed a little water, hand soap, and my favorite hooded sweatshirt (no fear the sweatshirt was redeemed after a good washing at the hotel).

The view at this restaurant was breathtaking.  We were happy to see that it wasn’t covered with fog.  The first time we went here, we were told how breathtaking it was only to see that we were in a cloud.  So this time we got to see the view that no picture can do justice.

We arrived in Vientiane just in time to find dinner! Our hotel was actually a Best Western!  It was very nice.  It had a Christmas tree in the foyer.  We stayed there for two nights.  It was a great two days.  They actually had a Pizza Company there!  We were able to eat bbq chicken pizza, and a salad bar! YUM!

While we were in Vientiane, we went to a Buddha park.  They had a very large Buddha that was laying on its side, it was huge.  It also had a symbolistic building of hell/heaven.  It  was creepy if you ask me.  I only peeked inside. Josh climbed to the top.  It is very interesting here in the beliefs they have.  It is a mix of Buddhism and Spirit worship.

While we were there, our friend LaChanda found a real park! It had slides and swings and sand, everything a kid could dream of!  I had to pinch myself when I heard she found one because I couldn’t believe we were still in Lao!  I mean come on Pizza Company, Best Western, and A PARK!

We took Noah to the park that evening and he LOVED the slide.  I don’t think I have seen him smile so big!  It brought Josh and I great pleasure to see the happiness in his face as he ran around going down the slide and climbing through all the neat play things.

We even caught a Lao sunset over the Mekong River.  It was a great visit to our capital city!

I think you probably understand now why I split this up into 4 parts.  We are still in Lao and I already have probably made you tired!  Haha! I think I will end here. See you in part 2!
